The Racist History of Coca-Cola
In 1863, Parisian chemist Angelo Mariani combined coca and wine and started selling it from his home. His wine, then called Vin Marian, was a smashing commercial success. John Pemberton, an Atlanta physician, decided to make his own version laced with Cocaine and called it Pemberton’s French Wine Cola and marketed it as “an invigorating tonic for the sex organs.”
Everyone from Sigmund Freud to esteemed medical doctors praised Pemberton’s Wine. But as his company was taking off, a Georgia county prohibition law was passed and outlawed his wine due to the alcohol content, not the cocaine. Pemberton quickly decided to replace his wine-cola with a sugary syrup but kept the cocaine ingredient. His new product would be marketed in 1886 as:
“A Temperance Drink”, as it was called, was sold for a nickel and appealed to the intellectual capacity amongst well-off whites. Blacks, who were not allowed into the segregated soda fountains, soon had access to the bottled drink. Suddenly, anyone who had 5 cents could enjoy the cocaine-fused “nerve tonic”. Middle-class whites, who enjoyed the sexual boost of this Cola, soon feared that “a cocaine-filled Negro would rape every white woman he saw.” Southern newspapers caved under the immense political pressure and began to report that “negro cocaine fiends” were raping white women and the police powerless to stop them.
Of course, none of this was true.
By 1903, the new owner of Coca-cola, Asa Griggs, had bowed to white fears and removed the cocaine additive and replaced it with perhaps even a more addictive substance: Caffeine and Sugar. By 1904, white, middle-class AmeriKlan’s were deeply addicted to cocaine and a “black market” for the powdery substance soon began. The rest is His-Story.
What I find interesting about researching this post is this:
When whites used this “sexually invigorating” nerve tonic, fears of murder, crime, rape and other sexually based violence against white women never entered the minds of white AmeriKlans. Even their own drug addiction was deemed “safe” to white AmeriKlan. Yet, it was our sexuality that caused an entire political movement to ban this stimulant from this “nerve tonic.”
I’d also like to point out that EVERY drug that was introduced into white AmeriKlan’s manicured homes, like opium, began as a “tonic” for their sexual and mental stimulation. But is was only when Dark Peoples had access to the drug that it was labeled as a danger to white society.
