Observations of an Invisible Woman

The Invisible Mark

I was born with a mark

Deep in my skin, it tells a tale

I do not see it

This is where I fail

A stain that cannot wash off

No detergent is strong enough

It steers my life

Traps my tongue

Ignites my soul

Like an electric knife

I was born with an invisible mark

Wrapped in barbed wire

My mark drains me

This is where I begin to tire

I do not see this mark

I wasn’t supposed to

My mark is my cross

Heavy and burdensome

Tiny shoulders lifting a heavy load

I was born with an invisible mark

But I do not see it

I’m kept in the dark

{I wrote this poem and dedicate it to my African family throughout the diaspora. You are not alone. I feel it too. Do not ever give up hope for a better tomorrow}

  1. WOW, great poem Negress! I love your use of metaphors and how you put them into words that evoke the emotions.

  2. Thank you, ynotme. I got the inspiration this afternoon.

  3. My mark is my cross

    Heavy and burdensome

Tiny shoulders lifting a heavy load

I was born with an invisible mark

But I do not see it

    I’m kept in the dark

1Jn_2:8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

Mat_16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

    – THE INVISIBLE MARK –

Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

Rev 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
